The Problem of Pretending

Living in a world of where false pretenses are occurring on a daily basis, life seems as though lived through a mask. Are you pretending your fellowship with God, other Christians or non-believers? Do you pretend to be something you're not?

Working in Jesus' Name

As we continue our teaching series, "The Office", exploring how our faith affects our work lives, we look at how our faith transforms the way we approach our life at work. Are you representing Jesus in what you do or where you work? God wants us to allow Him to be in everything we do. How will you choose to respond?

New Student Orientation

The beginning of a new school year can be tough, no matter how old you are! Thankfully, in almost every case there is some kind of new student orientation to help smooth the transition. As Jesus begins the Sermon on the Mount, He helps us smooth the transition into just who He is and what He is about.

Every day in little ways, we try to control our closest relationships. We want to get our way. We treat those closest to us poorly because we are looking out for ourselves. Paul's challenge to his audience was to systematically look at the relationships closest to them and to challenge them to live their new lives in Christ there - close to home.

Don’t Settle for a Cheap Imitation

Sometimes we settle for a cheap imitation of true life in Christ. We go to church, we do good things, we play the game, but we miss the point and end up living a watered-down version of the life Christ wants us to live. Paul's message is clear: Christ is the answer. Paul doesn't want us to settle for a cheap imitation - he wants us to become "mature in Christ." Maturity in Christ - understanding and accepting the wholeness of God and his purposes - is the real thing.

When ‘I Think I Can’ Won’t Work

We cannot physically or personally ever do enough to put ourselves into right relationship with God. No amount of "I think I can. I think I can. I think I can." will make us able to prove ourselves worthy before God. The good news is that we don't have to.

God rescues us. God transfers us. God reconciles us. God presents us as holy, blameless, and irreproachable before himself. Nowhere does Paul suggest that you and I have to rescue ourselves. It is only through the person of Jesus Christ that we can experience the reconciling power of God.

A Commitment to the Foundation

Foundations are very important. Ask anyone who is even remotely connected to the construction industry, and they will tell you that the most crucial part of any building is the foundation. Builders of skyscrapers tend to spend half the budget of the entire building on the foundation alone, and builders of bridges, dams, and other buildings all agree that the most devastating damage that can happen to a structure is damage resulting from a defective foundation.

While the biblical writer Paul may not have worked in construction, he did know something about foundations. When he wrote his letter to the Colossians thousands of years ago, he explains one of the most important aspects of foundations in our own lives.
